Thought about Independence Day today. It’s a holiday for immigrants.
We all come from immigrant stock. Those pioneers fought, bled, dreamed and traveled to be free to continue to fight, bleed, dream and travel. So we average Americans have good reason to commemorate the independence we enjoy.
One step further:
I think this holiday is just as much meant for the new Americans, the immigrants and refugees who are acutely aware of what it is to lack freedom, rights, recognition, etc. Being part of this country is still a privilege, and everyone is included in the founding ideals.
I hope that the newcomers took pride, as well, in tonight’s Star Spangled Banner. And I bet they even knew all the words. ;)
